Truth and Fiction in the DaVinci Code

My Review of Truth and Fiction in the DaVinci Code

Why do we care if this mystery novel got it’s facts right? It’s an incredibly exciting and well written mystery as Ehrman puts it! The problem; Brown asserts that the basis of the entire novel is factual. Ehrman believes that a work as popular as this and with as much influence should indeed have its fact right or not claim to be based on fact.

Bart Ehrman, historian and chair of religious studies at UNC, reviews Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code from a historical background, avoiding any theology or philosophical opinions. After reading this novel, my curiosity was piqued. I did my own research, but I wish that this book had been written. It would have saved me hours. Particularly convenient is that Ehrman sums his findings up in the introduction with 10 factual errors found in the book. So if a person is interested in just one topic…it can easily be found without having to wade though the entire book. Not an unpleasant task when it comes to this clear and interesting book.

Novel Progress

I have skipped a couple of days! I am very very behind on my word count. I suppose to be at 6,667 and right now I am at only 3,200. The election got me behind but I am going to get there. I did do some righting on the novel today.

I will post some excerpt from today. Here it is:

“Yeah” says Darrell “ I have done the mathematically calculations. I need to eat 1.6 oz every minute in order to eat the whole steak in forty-five minutes. That will leave me fifteen minutes to eat the bake potato, salad and roll”

I Started My Novel Today

It has begun. I have started my novel. The working title is "Convoy". I am only going to post excerpts from novel. Not whole parts. Here is today's tidbit.

The waitress moves 3 feet from the grill cook and begins at the top of her lungs.

“I HAVE ONE HASHBROWN SCATTERED, COVERED, SMOTHERED, CHUNKED, TOPPED AND DROWNED TWO EGGS OVER EASY AND PECAN WAFFLE DENVER OMELET PATTY MELT WITH FRIES HASHBROWN SCATTERED COVERED AND SMOTHERED THREE EGGS AND HAM AND DOUBLE ORDER OF CHOCOLATE PECAN WAFFLE”, dragging off her cigarette barely hanging in her mouth.

Hey for me it is all about fun and writing. Not going to edit till later. Not to late for you to join in..

Next Month..

One day I am going to write a novel! That is me! I have said this so many times.

What has stopped me? A Couple of Excuses:

1) "I need to take a 3 month hiatus from work to start my novel"
2) "I have No Plot!"
3) "I have No Time!"
4) "I want it to be perfect"

Well I found the perfect solution and it starts in two days.
The National Novel Writing Month known as NaNoWriMo to regulars.

So What is NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over talent and craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

As you spend November writing, you can draw comfort from the fact that, all around the world, other National Novel Writing Month participants are going through the same joys and sorrows of producing the Great Frantic Novel. Wrimos meet throughout the month to offer encouragement, commiseration, and -- when the thing is done -- the kind of raucous celebrations that tend to frighten animals and small children.

In 2003, we had about 25,000 participants. Over 3500 of them crossed the 50k finish line by the midnight deadline, entering into the annals of NaNoWriMo superstardom forever. They started the month as auto mechanics, out-of-work actors, and middle school English teachers. They walked away novelists.

So, to recap:

What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.

Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from your novel at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.

When: Sign-ups began October 1, 2004. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

As Chris Baty states in his book, "No Plot? No Problem!", The mystery machine to writing a novel is a Deadline. So I am doing it! I am going to write a novel in 30 days. I am also going to blog excerpts from my nove with many othersl.

One day I am going to write a novel!! That day starts in two days. And you can watch the progress!!

SCAMBAITING (Fighting the 419 Scam): An UPDATE

As Eric Olsen, Blogcritics.org, first mentioned in his article last November spambaiting is the lastest spamming of the spammers. This is an update of the progress Mike and friends have made.

Mike is a "scambaiter," dedicated to fighting back against those who send out the notorious 419 e-mails, promising untold wealth to anyone gullible or naive enough to disclose their bank details.

Mike asked us not to use his full name because he's dealing with some heavy cross-border criminals.

Briefcase full of dollars those who fall for the 419 cons are hoping for millions.
His group of volunteers at 419eater.com use their computer skills to fool the scammers, to disrupt their crimes, and to have some fun at the scammer's expense.

But many other sites have emerged with Scambaiting stories. Take Scam O Rama. This site is a clearing house of information for scambaiting anywhere from the legal information to success stories.

The letters posted here illustrate attempts at ADVANCE FEE FRAUD. The sender claims to be a bureaucrat, banker or royal toadie, who wants to cut you, and only you, in on the financial deal of a lifetime.

In plain English, the writer claims to be in a position to skim public accounts. Hint: There is no money to be laundered - except yours. Palms must be greased. With your money. Generally in the form of a Western Union money order. A few K here, a few K there... eventually you get wise, and retire to lick your wounds. Dead military officer, dead farmer, dead bank customer, reformed murderer, imaginary request for bid, lotto prize, different countries... same scam.

Setting aside the writer's attempt to rob you and (going through the mental contortions necessary to take the letter at face value) to steal from his own country, the letters are funny. Read them out loud at parties and see. The 100+ letters below introduce the literary genre of the Lads from Lagos. Some people write the scammers back. See right column.

Many of us can't believe that people fall for this crooked techniques.

Most readers say "what an obvious scam!".
Some say "I was almost fooled till I saw this site."
A handful say "couldn't mine be 'real'?"
Stay safe out there!

This is insane... TVBGONE..

I was reading articles about a new device that will cut off almost any
TV. It is called TV B GONE. Check out the Story

The Rut

Life seems to be a rut sometimes. Some nights I will sit down and
look at all the neat stuff that is on the 'net. Google SMS (cool...
used it on vacation and was very helpful) and Google Desktop. These
in mind are rut contributing items. These perpetuate the rut, they
make me want cooler things.

The rut makes you not content with your current computer, digital
camera, mp3 player or Tivo. Where does it end? When do we decide
what we have now is enough. That is why I believe in the phrase ONE.
I think you can watch this blog and say that I haven't done a great
job of simplify. I mean we do simple things. But we still get more
complicated things. I mean I want high speed Internet. But is or
isn't it simple. Who really knows.

Why am I writing this. I think that my life has lost the goal of
striving to simple. To read, to grow, to love, to know, to let go of
the desire and focus on Simple.

I believe that God makes life simple. You may not but I do.

My Daughter is Simple. She EATS, Sleeps and Poops/Pees. That is what
we all are about.
We need to focus on family on friends and helping others.

hmmm....

yesterday's adventure.

Well we forgot the camera yesterday. So this is what we did. We went south to Wilmington and did some exploration. Then we headed to Southport. ON the way we stopped near Bald Island which is a resort that only allows electric vechiles as transportation. But the highlight was riding the ferry to Fort Fisher. Once we arrived at Fort Fisher we watched some folks surf-sailing? (wake board with a parachute)

Google SMS

Google's Labs just launched a SMS service. This new service provides
the same information as the web searches, but in SMS format.

The users from USA who want to get the information must send an SMS to '46645', with an extra text. Why the number '46645'r? Try typing 'GOOGLE' with your mobile.

You've got more information on this link, but the main 'extra texts' are:

:: 'pizza new york' returns information from 'Google Local'
(businesses in local areas).

:: 'Smith San Francisco CA', information from 'PhoneBook' (phone
numbers and addresses for residences in the US).

:: 'Price ipod 20gb', prices from 'Froogle' (online products).

:: 'D computer', word definitions.

:: 'G population San Francisco' returns a classical Google search (you
get the two-line 'snippet').

:: Type 'sin(45 degrees)' and you'll use Google as a Calculator.

Check it out!

Short Changing the World....

Quick observation... Have you noticed that a Half Gallon of Ice Cream
is no longer 64 oz.. But 55 oz.. I remember from elementary school
that a half a gallon was 64 oz.. What do they think we are stupid!!

GBrowser - NOT HAPPENING!

AT the Web 2.0 Conference - Google board member and investor John Doerr said Tuesday that despite speculation, the search giant would not enter the Web browser market, but he predicted others would.

Doerr later joked, however, that just because he was on the board of Google didn't necessarily mean he knew what they were doing.

6 Weeks

Yesterday Emma was 6 weeks old. She is really starting to develop a
personality. She is starting to smile more frequently everyday. She
loves to have time in her crib for "kick time", this is where she sits
and watches her mobile and just kicks her legs. It is amazing! It
still overwhelms me (us) everyday the joy Emma has brought to our
lives.

We are going to be heading to Topsail Beach, NC next week to do some
exploring and vacationing. Emma's first trip to the beach. Yeah we
know she is just 6 weeks. No we aren't going to let her swim on her
own. But we should have lots of exciting pictures.

Speaking of Diaper Count this father has developed a way to keep track
of it all Look Here.I am jealous.

Human Tivo and Parent Brain

Sometimes I wish there was such thing as a HumanTivo. You know
everybody would love it.

You just had one of those conversations with your spouse (or
co-worker), the ones with the words 'yes you did say that' , 'no I
didn't say that'.. How priceless would the Human Tivo be in that
conversation. Just go to the previously archived conversation. Play
it Back! Or someone is talking to fast and you play the slow play
button. Or you are going deaf and instead of asking that person what
they said you just play the jump back button.

Well... we could have used the HumanTivo tonight. I said to Naomi,
"you want to rent a PPV movie tonight" and she said sure. We saw the
'The Prince and Me' on the list. So we decided to rent it. Well 2
minutes and $3.99 later, we remember that we had rented this movie
some one month ago on DVD (which we rarely do). See HumanTivo would
have been great to have at this point. Ahhh... Parent Brain...

Babies are simple

One baby! You know babies are just simple. All they really want is to eat, poop/pee and be entertained. I think in so many ways we need to get back to that in our lives. We need to get to the point where we have simplified. We don't have some many distractions. So many things pulling us away from what is the most important thing.

What I learned from the Apprentice this week? (week 3)

Hmm.. what I learned this week..

1) Don't put all your eggs in one basket. If you think you are going
to be able to put together a deal to give away 1 million dollars in 24
hours. Also, think that you might need a back up plan

2) Leave yourself plenty of time to move 800 cases of Toothpaste.

3) If you act crazy in front of a lot of people (and you have crazy
hair). They are going to think you are crazy (regardless if you are
crazy). And the Donald. He don't like Crazy!

A9.com

Amazon.com is given a instant reward discount if you use their new search engine A9.com. The discount is pi/2%. The aren't really advertising it. Read what they sent me below..

Douglas Moore, since you've been using A9.com recently, virtually everything at Amazon.com is automatically an additional Ï€/2% (1.57%) off for you. Collecting this discount is zero effort on your part. It will be applied automatically at checkout (it will happen whether you use the shopping cart or our 1-Click Shopping®). You don't need to do anything to get this discount except keep using A9.com as your regularsearch engine.

We don't advertise this additional discount that we give in exchange for using A9.com, so if you want your friends to know about it, please tell them. It is probably the only way they'll find out. All they have to do is use A9.com as their regular search engine. They should make sure they are signed in to A9.com (it should be recognizing them by name) so that we can be certain they get credit for their visit.

While the Ï€/2% discount is a good additional reason to use A9.com it isn't the best reason. A9.com licenses its web search results from the industry leader Google, and then supplements those results with Amazon's Search Inside the Book™ results. The coolest feature is that A9.com keeps track of your search history for you on the server side.

To see how this works, do some A9 searches from your computer at work and then sign in to A9.com from your computer at home.

How can we afford this additional π/2% discount? Sponsored links revenue -from the small text-based ads on A9.com and Amazon.com search results pages -will help offset costs we incur through the Rewards promotion. With our automatic π/2% discount, we are effectively sharing with you some of the money we collect from sponsored links, i.e. sharing the pi.

Please use A9.com and tell your friends.

Thank you

Happy Shopping!

Emma in pictures

We have gone overboard in a couple of ways i think. Ok I have gone
overboard. I probably take about 20 to 30 pictures of emma a day.

We have an HP 735 Digital Camera and it takes really
amazing shots. I can't tell you how many pictures we have taken to processed.

And I use our Sony DCRTRV22 MiniDV Camcorder to shoot
video footage. So much video footage. I could shoot video of ever movement!

We edit all that on Ulead VideoStudio 8 - Home Movies. It has been lots of fun working on this. I am working a XMAS dvd for everyone!

I can't imagine not living in the digital age where you couldn't
instantly have pictures to share!!

Self Holding Pacifier

Now Emma is not necessarily addicted to here pacifier but she does
enjoy it every now and then. The thing I have noticed about a
pacifier is that it just comes out. Some how can we invent a pacifier
that will stay in without falling out.

I have thought can I attach a string to the pacifier around here
ears. Or could I place some type of dissolving glue around the
pacifier just to last about 30 minutes.

We are still going through alot of diapers but it is daddy and Emma
bonding time!

Things I learned from the Apprentice

It is funny. We have had a severe storm tonight. It knocked out our
sat. for a while. So we were watching just one channel. So thus we
watched the Apprentice.

Things I learned from the Apprentice tonight:

1) People will buy the strangest flavors of ice cream
2) Men dressed in bow ties sells ice cream
3) Don't steal other people's space to market your wares
4) That caviar can be ridiculous expensive
5) Don't volunteer away your immunity.
6) Don't look weak in front of Trump
7) Always Always Always pack a bag

If I knew then what I know now I would of....

If I knew then what I know now I would of had a child along long time
ago. My daughter brings so much joy, so much happiness, so much
excitement. She makes me understand why there is so much love in the
world. It is hard to think of people who have children and they harm
them in some way, or neglect them.

Bracing for the storm

Well we are still holding up in the office. WE are bracing for me
rain. We are expecting up to 12 inches over the next couple of days.
Our ground is already saturated so we are expecting more flooding.

Our family has a condo in the Gulf Shores so we are just hoping for
minimal property damage.

20 Diapers a Day!

Like I said before I belive our dear sweet child has formed a
partnership with Pampers Swaddlers. In 24 hours, we caculated that
she wore excatly 20 diapers. There are probably two reasons for this
1) her desire not to have a dirty diaper 2) Dad loves to use the baby wipe
warmer.

She is just more and more beautiful. Tonight we are holding up in the
Office at the camp where I work. Our house has been treated for fleas
and the doctor recommends 24 hours before we let the baby in the
house. So I packed 20 diapers and some baby wipes. (but we don't
have a warmer here).

ON being a Father

I know this blog has been all over the place lately. I haven't really been that focused.

Emma is amazing. She is going on three weeks. THREE WEEKS! She is an absolute bundle of joy. I was thinking today about how beautiful the birth was. How everyone was so happy! How all the nurses were amazing! We were so blessed. We had some many people praying for us and helping us. We had a Doula (labor assistant) she kept me calm. Granted there were times when the birth was stressful. That Naomi was in alot of pain. I didn't like those times.

When it was time for her to "push" the baby. It was amazing. Her mom, Carolyn (doula), Amanda (labor nurse), Naomi and me. We all worked together to get my beautiful daughter out. WOW!! WOW!! There was a harry minute or two when emma's shoulder was stuck on the pubic bone. But God provided people that knew what they were doing. Thank God! We didn't know what sex the baby was before she was born. And once she was born I was elated but it didn't really matter to me what sex she was.

We are so blessed. She is so beautiful. She is growing every every day. A few days after birth she had jaundice. But she handled that like a champ. She now weighs 9 lbs 8 ozs. WOW!!!

So I am a Dad. I have gone back to work. I struggle with that. BUT the amazing thing is I live were I work. So I can see them whenever I want. Next week I am working half days every day.

She sleeps in our arms. She looks and stares. She listens to me read to her. I want to write her a song.

I believe in GOD! And she makes me believe even more.

Baby Emma Marie is Here!

Well we are home now.. WE had our baby on Tuesday morning at 12:30
a.m. Wow what an experience it was... To start off on Sunday they
gave naomi some medicine to loosen her cervix. And then began giving
her petocin in the morning which help start the contraction process.
Hour after hour we waited and slept and waited for her to be dialated
to 10 cms. Finally about 11:30 on Aug 23rd (Which is Naomi's bday)
she began to push and 1 hour later we had a beautiful new baby girl...

The last couple of days have been a huge learning curve. From
learning about nursing and jaudice. That is right she has a little
jaundice. She is wearing a UV Blanket to help break up the Billy
Reuben in here...

So day after day more about emma!! She is beautiful

Doctor says that the best is working. That here blood pressure is
down and that she is getting plenty of liquids.
She says she feels alot better too! She said she didn't realize how
bad she was feeling until she started relaxing.

It is raining today and that means the church camp that is here this
week will have to cope and find other activites for some of there kids
to do.

I am doing good. We are proabably looking at having a kid around Aug
23rd or 24th

Stories Part ONE

this summer..
So this is going to be an entry of all the things.. Afterwards will be
a entry of detail about each incident. Of course the details that I
can give in a public forum.

Father jumping on Kid at Closing - written in today's entry

First Incident - FATHER JUMPS ON CHILD

It would seem that one of our counselors had a camper who was
rebellious in nature. He enjoyed giving his younger brother a hard
time. As typical brothers are. He was constantly going around a
harrassing his younger brother at camp. One such incident really
proved to upset the younger brother. So the younger brother had
enough. He decided to retaliate. He took a random pair of underwear
and wrote his older brother's name on the paper of underwear. He then
proceeded to place this underwear in his brother's units "mail can".
This made his brother very very very very very MAD. So during our
closing time that week I am up front going through lost and found.....
all the sudden I see this Dad jump on HIS SON in the crowd of KIDS
because he was about to hit his younger brother. Needless to say the
crowd was shocked and so was I.

Well that is Drama number #1...

Well Camp is over

I spent about 17 hours in the hospitial b/c they wanted to monitor
here protein and bp. She now has 24 hour bedrest.

There is so much to share about the summer. Hopefully I can share that
more over the next couple of weeks!!

We love our Graco Pack and Play.

End of Summer is near

The end of the summer is near. I have very up and down feelings about
that. In many ways it has been a very hard summer and in many ways it
has been a great summer.

We have lots of challenges before us to figure out how to unify the
staff more. What is the perfect mix of new and old. How will we
format camp.

We have been playing around with many ideas for camp for next summer.
Sailing or not sailing different aspects of camp.

But the most exciting thing about camp coming to a close this year is
not that we are going on vacation but that soon we will have a new
additon to our family. This is very very very exciting and we are
looking forward to this.

Well I am sure as the summer nears the end. My blogging will become
more and more active.

Eighth Week

This past week was one of the strangest weeks I have ever encountered.

We had pranks with people putting food in cabins. We had homesick
campers on the trail. We have massive amounts of drama. But we will
make it through.

ON Sunday we picked up Sarah from the Airport. She seemed to have had
a real good time on her trip to europe.

I have found a website that I am enjoying really good political
content. http://www.politicalbrew.com/brew.cgi

MORE MORE

Well the summer rapidly coming to a close. So far things have been
really crazy. This is been the hardest summer yet.

Good news is that one of my staff is returning from "sick leave".
Which makes me very happy and content. I anxiously await her return.

The relationships that the staff build while they are at camp is
always unique. It always seems that a couple of staff members get
there "hearts broken" during the summer. Mostly the males!

Naomi and I are doing really well. Her back has been hurting her a
little bit. But she has found ways to cope with it. She is so sweet.
We are going go and pick up her sister from the airport on Sunday!

Well More later...

Week Seven

Wow!!! More craziness and excitement.

To start off with one of our staff member's took another staff
member's car and wrecked it. That is crazy. So we have fired yet
another person... That is six people that we have lost this summer
from either firing our health reason.Clint and Allyson were some much
much fun ... they have been volunteering for the last couple of
days....

We had a insane storm this week...more later.

End of Fourth Week

Wow what can I say! The fourth week also a challenge. We continue to experience a plethora of rain. Still facing challenges with staff. We had staff members take kids offsite this week. I was extremely frustrated. Also had a staff member put his hand through a window in a door and we also had a staff member put the salad bar through a door. Both were accidently. But it is amazing how things happen in pairs..

Fourth Week

WOW! This summer has definitely been the most challenging yet. I have to deal with lots of staffing issues. There seems to be a great deal of discord at times. I can't decide that if it is more problems or that there are staff members with lots of integrity.

I really can't write much about the details of what happen in this public blog. But I had to dismiss two more staff members yesterday.

We had a great deal of rain last week. And so far the rain is continuing this week.

Naomi is heading to Athens tomorrow for Claire's rehearsall. And then I heading down on Wednesday for the Wedding.

Baby Names - The pregnancy talking!!!

Today Naomi and I were at the Doctor talking about baby names. So I was playing around with names. One crazy name we saw was Osbert - what kind of crapping name is that..

So anyway I was playing with names. I said lets call him Ronald George Moore. And Naomi understood that I was doing president names. So she said yeah How about Ronald Henry Moore.

I said,"what"? She said Henry Ford. And then I said no that was Gerald Ford. Hilarous!!!

It was the pregnancy talking!!!

Some Observations

First Off... I know everyone is sick of SPAM. But I am really sick of spam. Now so spam I get b/c I requested it. I know it is technically not spam then. But I really thought it would be fun to read when I signed up... But now... Alas... I don't... I just don't

One Channel Update. Ha Ha.. The Jokes on me. So we decided to get a Sat. Well they still haven't come out to offical install the Sat. I just sort of hooked it up. I don't know If I installed incorrectly or what but it is getting a very weak signal now. IT MAKES Things really complicated. I maintain that one Channel makes life simplier.

We are keeping life simple still. Living in the woods.

We have a Doctors' Appointment today. routine. But we love them..

I have a majority of my staff hired... more later today (hopefully)

Slacker - My observations

The wedding was a lot of fun. We were able to meet lots of new people which is always fun. Lots of laughter and lots of smiles.

We are going tonight to our second visit to church that we are going to join. Hopefully Naomi will feels up to it..

hopefully I will be able to write more later.

More than One Channel

I guess offically this blog will have to be about how to simplify our lives... We have more than one channel. It was inevitable that this would happen.

Life is getting busier and busier. We did win a CRIB system which was exciting from STOKKE. Very nice crib system and changing table. Check it out!!

But our new television system has tivo. So tivo does make tv viewing simple.

So I am going to change the Name to ONE today!! Same Blog...Different Name.

Tuesday, March 30, 2004

Another

We are starting to settle in some at the house. And we might be going to more than one channel again. But why is it such a big deal. Hey I live in the sticks!! That is why... We will see.

I was thinking about things that are simple. One of the simplest thing that we have in life is RAIN. It just falls (DuH!)... But it is very simple..

One Channel

HEY!! So Apprentice last week was very good.. It is going to be very interesting this week to see who gets booted.

So we are back to one channel.. It is kinda nice.... I only have one choice again. Life is simple. But we have been so busy moving in and being in a real house takes a lot of work. There is a lot of house repairs to make. Lots of painting to be done. So I haven't had any time really to watch the Boob Tube. Our for that matter even blog.

Work is getting busy. We are getting towards crunch time which means I need to get all my summer staff hired, staff manual finished and get ready to start training folks.

And the farther time ticks the closer to being a DAD I get.

We have decided if it is going to be a boy that we are going to name him Ephraim and if it is a girl the name is going to be Emma.

Well more later...

Wednesday, March 24, 2004

Progress

Well work is keeping me busy..... But we have made significant progress on many things...

The only TV I am really watching is the Apprentice except for last week b/c it was a flashback.

We have moved into the new house completely we are slowly unpacking things. But we are making progess.

Naomi is feeling much better. We are going to the Doctor tommorrow for a check-up. I like the check-ups we always get to hear the babies heart beat. She is really starting to show now.

It is pretty amazing the way the body can adapt and change. And grow another human inside of the body.

Women are amazing. They endure so much.

What is up?!

There is a light at the end of the tunnel. We are starting to get most of our stuff out of the OLD HOUSE and the NEW HOUSE is starting to come together. We are hanging lights and staining furniture...

We also still have mutiple channels. Although I think that it should be off anyday now... We did enjoy watching American Idol last night...Pretty addicting show...

Personally I think the IRAQ war was worth it. I am tired of all the negative media coverage...

Anyway....

Saturday, March 13, 2004

More Channels and NOTHING IS ON!!

Yeah like I was mentioning that I have more channels and there is still nothing on........ OH Well..

I spent most of the day today staining furniture and moving stuff from our old house....

More than ONE... The Apprentice....And yes I was trying to cheat

Well...it is offical we moved to another house up the hill. And it came with a satillete dish. So we have more than one channel to chose from. We still watch the same one channel. Interesting. It is probably b/c we really only watch Tv on thursday. I am still addicted to the apprentice. I like TROY. I semi liked heidi but I am glad she gone. It never seems that kumai produces much.

The other Team trumped protege'. Selling advertisement worked. Worked well. I wonder who Troy and Kumai are going to pick to be on there team. Will they pick AMY she is undefeated!! Never has she been to the Board Room!!!

Oh yeah, I did have six blogsnob links I guess it was cheating.

Whoops!! I will remove them.

Tuesday, March 09, 2004

Sorry......

Sorry I haven't updated in a while...Like I said we have been in the process of moving.

What the passion meant to me

I had to take a night to digest the movie. It isn't one of the movies you would every want to own. At least I wouldn't. But I do believe it is a must see. I am not one that really projects his views harshly on others. I am a Christian. I have to say while watching the movie I was appalled at the violence. But I was also filled with JOY. Because I knew the end of the story that he was going to be a new..

Don't take this blog as a reach out to convert you. NOPE this is just my opinion. And where I stand on this. And by no means (obviously I am not a in depth movie review)

The passion

Wow...we saw the Passion for christ tonight....words can't describe it...more on it later.

Sunday, February 22, 2004

Ahh........

Ahh... I have to say the biggest thing that one channel has done for me is to force me to read more.

Lately, I have gone back to reading The Chronicles of Narnia. These are great adventures. Love it!

Found a great social software site yesterday Mediachest. It allows you simplify your life by tracking where you have lent your dvds, books, cds and etc..

Pregnancy Update - We thought my wife was over the sickness of being pregnant but had a reouccrence this morning. I hope that it will end soon for her. It is hard as an expectant father to watch my awesome wife go through sickness.

And finally I am going to way in on this. I think the more choices that we have for President the better. I am personally tired of the two party system.

Never lose on ITUNES free pepsi.

This is a Great Idea on how not to lose on the Itunes contest. I had to post this......This is so simple I love it.

Major Shift - Striving More and More and why I believe blogs are to secret to simplicity

Well Today...I am going to start adding alot more of my thoughts to the site.

Lately, I have been sucked into watching some TV. I am not saying I think tv is evil. I just think I could do better. One of the things I believe that has simplified my life is reading blogs. You might be saying what? How is that simple?

Well, you can learn so much from blogs. You can relate so much to what people are going through.

Things I have learned from certain blogs:

My Wife and I are pregnant. I have learned from theworkingmother how lucky we are to be future parents. But trust me we still have a long haul.

**Tangent**- Pregnancy in many ways is a very life complexing event. It is amazing how many classes we have already been too.. **End Tagent**

You can learn a lot about new music. A lot of chatter about Danger Mouse's Grey Album. On this Blog A Complete Bunch of Pants. You can also learn about what is going on around the country and world that isn't reported on the news. For instance, that Nazi's are rallying at NC state capitol.

In many ways I read blogs because they give me a view in to life (almost better than the mall or the airport). This was a recent topic on orkut in Bloggers Community (let me know if you want to be invited).

Why do you read blogs? Let me know!

More of Our Life

Not that it matters to most who read this. But I am going to merge another blog I have with this one. It is all valid. So I am going to post some former post here about being a new dad.

I posted this last Sunday!

Just for Dad: Becoming a Dad:

Found this Article on the March of Dimes Website...

What you can do:
Be involved. Go with your partner to her preconception and prenatal visits.
Watch, listen, browse and read. Watch videotapes, listen to audiotapes, check out the Internet, or read books about pregnancy, childbirth and being a parent.
Help plan for the baby. Talk to your partner about what you both want for the baby. Decide where the baby will sleep, and make that part of your home colorful and welcoming for the baby. Go shopping for baby things. Look together at your finances.
Learn. Go to childbirth education classes with your partner.
Help your partner stay healthy during pregnancy. Help her eat healthy foods, exercise, quit smoking, stay away from alcohol and illegal drugs and avoid dangerous workplace and household hazards (such as paint thinner and weed killers). Quit smoking yourself. Secondhand smoke is bad for pregnant women and babies.
Continue to have sex if you and your partner wish to do so. In most cases, it’s safe for a couple to have sex during pregnancy. Check with your partner’s health care provider. To avoid sexually transmitted infections, have sex with only one person who doesn’t have any other sexual partners and/or use a condom when having sex. Discuss HIV testing for you and your partner with your health care provider.
Be supportive. If your partner chooses to breastfeed, support her decision.

Week 12

We are nearing the end of the first trimester. My wife naomi is still feeling sick in the mornings and other points of the day. I wish there were things I could do as a husband to help comfort her more. I try to be available for every need. I encourage her to rest. I am doing my best to meet here cravings. We have another appointment this week to see the OB doctor I am very excited about this. Our last visit we did get a songram picutre. It is a wonderful picture.

American Dreams

This show is incredible. We absolutely love it. The story lines are amazing.

How can you take it?

You multiple TV channel watchers. How can you stand it? All the crap on TV. I thinking about moving from one channel to no channel.. I can't take it anymore.

We are still away from home. And I was sucked into that trap. You know the one I am talking about. Switching channel after channel after channel after channel. Infomerical, crap, crap, crap, rerun, rerun, old crappy movie, World Poker Tour (which I find entertaining).

Enough of my venting. This just secures my desire to live more simple.

Complex TV

Hey we are at my parents house today. They get more than one channel.. Lots of choices!!! LOL....What to watch!

Friday, February 13, 2004

More Simple

So I had a reader email and ask me a good question. Where is the simplicity in one channel?

Well it is the begin of simplicity. This is why! With one channel you only have one choice. As I mentioned in the introduction to this blog that it really is the start of living simple. The reason we have one channel is b/c we live in a rural area where our only access to tv is an antenna. The trees are too abundant around us for a satillette.

So it is one channel. It is either on or off. It makes TV Viewing simple. So that is the beginning of living simpler.

It is smack in your face when you go to homes where there is mutiple channels. There is so much to chose from that it overwhelming.

TV Sweeps - Matt Lauer all over the world!

We didn't get home in time last night to watch tv.

I did get a chance to tape the latest episode of "Fear Factor Couples". The couple that likes to eat the nasties got the boot last night. They were a lot of fun to watch. We also have been taping alot Matt Lauer's "Where in the world" on the Today Show. He is in the swiss alps today. It is very exciting watching him hanglide and ski off of a mountain. Very entertaining.

I think in a lot of ways reading blogs takes the place of my tv viewing. Speaking of Davezilla has a very funny entry today. Things you never hear a guy saying to each other. Here are a couple of examples. "We should all three wear matching sweathers to the hardware store" or "Oh you poor baby! That must have really hurt." Very Fun Check out his website for more. Enjoy

Sunday, February 08, 2004

The Apprentice - Episode 7

Watching the previews for this week episode. I predict that Omrosa is getting the boot. Now I am only basing this on that he said the person was rude that is getting fired.

TV bites tonight. I am getting tired of Law and Order. I hope all you people out there are enjoying the grammy's. I have heard that beyonce has one four or either five grammys.

Sports on NBC - AFL and Nascar

As I frequently do, I will comment what is on our one channel today. Being a man I do love sports and most of the year we miss out on NBC. Unless you like Notre Dame Football.. Well two sports that I have become fans of b/c of the one channel issue. One is Arena Football and the Other is Nascar.

So I am watching AFL right now. Fast paced football at it's based. No I know that Nascar is a weird sport but it is entertaining. Never really thought I would be a racing fan. But it feeds that need for sports in my heart. Go Ahead make fun of me.

6 Ways to Simplify Your Life
Advice from best-selling author Elaine St. James.

From: Issue 15 | June 1998, Page 156 By: Michael Warshaw Photographs by: Bernd Auers
Elaine St. James's best-selling books are themselves marvels of simplicity. They are short, well designed, and organized for quick reading. They offer hundreds of techniques - some modest, some radical - to simplify your life. Here are six of our favorites. Here are six of our favorites.

1. Resign from any organizations whose meetings you dread.

2. Learn to live with less information: Stop watching TV news. Cancel half your magazine subscriptions.

3. Work where you live, or live where you work.

4. Be in bed by 9 p.m. one night a week.

5. Live on half of what you earn, and save the other half.

6. Keep asking, "Is this going to simplify my life?"

AOL Seeks Refund in Wake of Jackson Incident - This is cracking me up

FROM AD WEEK - NEW YORK America Online, the sponsor of this year's Super Bowl halftime show, is seeking a refund in the wake of singer Janet Jackson's breast-baring incident during the telecast, sources said.

The Time Warner Internet unit is asking the National Football League, which sold the halftime sponsorship, to pay up, according to sources. AOL planned to replay the halftime show on its service, but cancelled in light of a Federal Communications Commission probe into the incident. The halftime show featured a duet that ended with singer Justin Timberlake pulling off part of Jackson's costume to reveal her right breast.

The NFL, however, believes the compensation should be provided by Viacom's CBS and MTV, which aired and produced the event, respectively, sources said. On Monday, MTV in a statement called the incident "unrehearsed [and] unplanned."

"We're still gathering information and we'll continue talking with AOL," said an NFL representative. A CBS rep said the NFL sells the halftime sponsorship, adding that, "Since this is not our sponsorship, there's not much else we can say."

Meanwhile, sources said that the NFL has cut Justin Timberlake's N' Sync band mate, JC, from performing in this weekend's Pro Bowl halftime show in Honolulu. Hawaiian performers have replaced the singer, sources said.

JANET and JUSTIN - Careful some nudity in links

Ok... I hate TV. So I didn't get to see the soup Er Bowl. But I am so sick sick sick of exposed skin and crap like that. I just get tired of having sex slammed in my face. I am tired of stars thinking the only way they can get media exposure is doing crap.

BUT it does work. I know. Let's just have some respect for the world. don't show your b*east on tv. WHY? Why do we need this. What does it accomplish.

Can't we leave some things to our imagination?

Plus this story says that CBS knew this was going to happen. It makes you want to smash all tv's....BUT HERE I AM LINKING TO IT. Promoting sex.

You can call me a prude that is fine. I am just done with nudity and crap on tv. And movies have gone way to far for "realism".

I loved the matrix but the last one had way to many fight scenes. It was just so dull. Give me plot, give me character development and SHOW us respect!

Oh well! Just check out the story on Drudge.

I believe the best way to simplify your life is to start with your money.

BTW, friends was a stinking rerun. ARGH. MORE RERUNS.

John Kerry

... Too Funny To pass up.

The Apprentice

I love the Apprentice one of the many great things about NBC. I also love friends. I am really afraid that the local channel here is going to show the debate instead of friends or the apprentice. I WILL BE MAD. I can't change the channel...... Don't get me wrong. I care about politics but I just love the Apprentice more.

Simple

Snowed In Day Two! Wow!

Day two. Can't get out of the camp. We are still snowed in.

The beauty of living simple sometimes that it is so simple. Ok, I know that sounds like a very stupid statement. But let me give you some examples:

1) I have dial-up internet - It is either ON or OFF. I don't have to worry about whether the cable company or the DSL is having low bandwidth issues

2) We live in a beautiful area. We go for a walk. It is so simple. We don't have to get in a bus/car for a beautiful park. We live in the park. We go out our door.

3) I think reading is so simple. Whether you reading peoples web logs, magazine's or books. It is simple.

But I know it is boring to read about such simplicity. I am not trying to win awards by ranting on about simplicity. I am striving for simplicity. In every aspect of our lives.

I think some where along the way we missed it. I think you can have technology and live simple. It is a fine balance. But we let things make our lives complicated. More on that later.

But the best example of simple living are indoor cats. That eat, sleep, poop, play and then sleep some more. Now that is simple.

Some people don't want to live simple. Me I do. I don't want to spend gobs of money on crap. I do sometimes. I found this great discussion board on Living Below your means. I put a link in the menu section. More later

Living Simple.

Simplicity ...ARGH!!

Well today is one of those days where you wish you weren't so SIMPLE. We are snowed in. Now this might be a southern thing, b/c I haven't mentioned this yet but we are in the south. So snow in the south means everything shuts down. That people have bought all the bread and milk for miles around (that is a blog by itself)

I used the term snow but it really is just sleet. We can't go anywhere in this rural area. The roads aren't passable. So we are watching TV right now. The One Channel so just lots of Today show right now. But we are about to hit the time of day where crappy TV comes on. SOAP OPERAS - sorry soap fans. Alright then!! These are the days when my wife and I say alright we are going to get satellite. (We have decide not to get a satellite to SIMPLIFY our lives).

Most days. One Channel makes decisions easy. We don't have to surf channels. We either like it or we don't. And if we don't we cut it off. We either go outside, read, play a board game or surf the internet. If you don't realize TV is a trap. When we go to visit relatives I will sit in front of the TRAVEL CHANNEL all day and watch the World Poker Tour marathon. You know it is true. You have done it.

But today.....ONE Channel and snowed in.

Living Simple with One Channel. More later!

One Channel - A brief introduction

In November of 2001, I began a new journey. For years I have been working at Camps, but that was in the summers. The camps I worked at was rural, but there was a town reasonably close enough where you could get groceries within five minutes. When I moved to my new camp (which will remain nameless) I moved to a true rural area. It is 30 minutes to a decent grocery store. I love nature and I love the outdoors. But when not engaged in those activities. I just like any other male surround my life with gadgets.

So by November 2001 television had become a part of my life. Just like most Americans my life had become wrapped in the television. It is where I got my news and entertainment (and still is to some degree). When moving into my job provided home I was furnished a TV Antenna (what in the world is this antique device). ***Now let me digress for a moment. Growing up as a kid in Atlanta we got all the network channels. Cable TV wasn't the norm. I remember when we got cable. So I am not one of those people growing only knowing cable. I mean I can remember my Commodore 64 and 300 baud modem. *** So back to the story. I proceeded to plug the antenna cable into my TV and found that I got ONE CHANNEL. Hey this is better than no channels as I was thinking. That one Channel was NBC. (Not insult others but I was thinking of all channels to just get this was the best to have).

This Blog is to document what just one channel (and living in a rural area) has done for our lives. The coming blogs will be of current and past events that we have encountered. We live in a modest sized house (provided by the camp in which I am employed), we have three cats and my wife is pregnant with our first child. She is also a financial/debt advisor. To bring our lives back to a more community oriented life. We aren't there. This will be the beginning of striving and what happens along the way. My wife will be adding her thoughts to our journey.
